TimeBanks USA

TimeBanks USA was started as a social change organization in 1987 by economist Edgar Cahn. He had begun formulating the idea of time as money in 1980 when he was teaching at the London School of Economics . When he returned to the United States, he began developing a system of  service credits that became “time dollars” and “time banking” in which each hour of service is equal to one time dollar.

The mission of TimeBanks USA is “Strengthening communities through reciprocity.”

As a member of TimeBanks USA, TakomaTime has access to the web-based program called Community Weaver that we use to manage our timebank. This is where members record their offers and requests and the hours they give and receive. Community Weaver does all the accounting when people bank and spend their hours. TakomaTime coordinators also use it to keep in touch with members and to arrange events.

While membership in TakomaTime is free and there is no charge for exchanging hours, TakomaTime does pay an annuyal membership fee that in 2011 will be $325. Donations help pay our membership fee, and for pot luck dinner supplies and informational flyers. Please make a donation using the button above so we can continue to develop TakomaTime.
